Kristin McDonnell: e@nu Speaker Series
Kristin McDonnell is a Northwestern alumna and third generation tech entrepreneur. She began her entrepreneurial career right out of college with a startup. Kristin's e@nu presentation,"Climbing the VC Fundraising Pyramid in 7 Easy Steps," included lessons on passion and people. McDonnell stressed the importance of passion early on in the presentation, explaining how VCs are only willing to invest in a startup when there has been five to ten years of passion behind it. Kristin also imparted that passion is necessary to inspire people, even those you work with.
"Look broadly as well as closely," McDonnell said about forming a team for a startup. When raising capital, VCs will heavily scrutinize teams, McDonnell said. She advised future entrepreneurs to reach out on LinkedIn to talk up world experts. Big names don't get tapped for advice as much as people think, she explained. McDonnell closed her presentation on the topic of having peace of mind while traversing the venture capital fundraising journey. She advisied attendees to take a lesson from the popular Disney movie "Frozen" and "Let it Go" when VCs don't commit. Ninety-five percent of them will say "no", she said, but you only need one "yes."
